The bare necessities

Like everybody here, I love to travel. To me, one of the best ways to do so is by train as a first look at a new country.

In this photo, I had arrived from Vyskov in the Czech Republic after a couple hour train ride to Bratislava. I had a short time to change trains for my final destination, Presov, in the eastern part of Slovakia.

After finding a comfortable seat, a lady came by with a trolley selling drinks and snacks. Of course I had to have a coffee - I always have to have a coffee!

After adding the milk and sugar, I took the necessities out of my small backpack that I travel with - my phone, ipod and my most prized possession, my passport. (My notebook/journal didn't make it into the photo!)

A first class ticket from Bratislava to Presov, about 200 miles away and roughly 5 hours, is only 25 Euros. If you get the intercity, there is also a basic dining cart that has excellent food (try the resen, which is snitzel). A plate of meat with potatoes and vegetables, plus a beer (Zlaty Bazant or Saris are the preferred ones) will set you back 6-7 Euros.

If you get to Slovakia, let me know what you think of the place!

Thanks David! You know, I am so amazed at how many people never get a passport! Most Europeans don't have one, but they can travel throughout the EU countries (and some others) with just a national ID card, but I feel naked without mine. I travel around Europe and have a Belgian ID card but would never, ever go outside the borders without my passport. I have a pretty neat cover for it to, as you can see in the photo!

I made it to Slovakia and I loved it. I would like to get back there in the summer. I was there in December last year. I went to Bratislava, Banska Stiavnica, the High Tatras, Levoca and Presov. Really liked it!

Woah, you made it all the way to Presov! This is where my girlfriend is from, so I get to this small city (but 3rd biggest in the country) a couple of times a year. You should have made the short trip to Kosice too but I wouldn't recommend heading all the way east just for that.

I went to Presov to see a friend as well. I spent my time there with his lovely family and had a great time. I did make it to Kosice but only to catch my overnight train to Bratislava. Next time I go I will make more time to explore the region. I really liked it, spectacular views in Slovakia.

You went to Kosice to get the train to Bratislava? You didn't have to do that! You could have taken the train from Presov to Kysak and changed there instead of backtracking. Next time. (o:

Hi, yeah I knew that but I wanted to get the midnight sleeper train that got into Bratislava at 6.30am, so I could just get on and go to sleep without changing and it was the best train for my me getting my flight. So my friends drove me to Kosice, I got on and went to sleep in a bed and didn't have to worry about getting off till the last stop. It was a great sleep actually and only 25.00 euro for a bed.
