Temple of the Feathered Serpent

Xochicalco is a fascinating archaeological site located a few hours south of Mexico City in the state of Morelos. The site came to prominance after the fall of Teotihuacan and may have played a part in Teotihuacan's demise by blocking valuable trade links to the south with the Maya and Oaxaca. The Temple of the Feathered Serpent displays Mayan seated figures with a central Mexican feathered serpent (Quetzalcoatl). The combination of Maya and Mexican themes indicates a strong Maya influence far beyond their realm. Some have even attributed the site's founding directly to a group of Maya warrior merchants. Xochicalco occupies a ridgeline and offers spectacular views over Morelos and also has some unique astronomical architecture.
