Tawlét, Beirut, Lebanon
by Kamal Mouzawak, As Told To Sarah Henry
Tawlét is my life: a cooperative-style kitchen where producers from the market cook home-style lunches. Lebanese people may not share religion or politics, we may come from the city or country, we may have money or not, but we can all sharekebbeh [a traditional dish made with bulgur]. Sector 79, 12 Naher St., Chalhoub Building #22 961/1-448-129, Monday–Friday, 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Saturday, noon–4 p.m. Cooking classes Monday–Thursday, 4 p.m.–6 p.m.

It was a real treat when the young Australian-Lebanese activist Oday Kamal took my Egyptian friend and I to this great gastronomic treasure. The entire concept of the restaurant, "homemade" and "organic," is fantastic. It's some of the best food I have ever had in my life.
