Tampons and Tiles on display together
Contemporary art can be a bit strange, to say the least. I've seen tyres on sticks with lace curtains, cardboard boxes on walls and other oddities. Nothing, however, had prepared me for a chandelier made out of tampons.
It's very effective; light bounces off the plastic wrappers so it does, indeed, twinkle a little. It's impressive, not only for the novelty factor, but also for its structure; it must have taken ages to tie all those strings together!
The best thing about this exhibit in the Contemporary Art Museum in Elvas is its juxtaposition with ancient, hand-painted azulejos. These blue and white tiles depicting the life story of Queen Isabel originally decorated the hospital building which now houses museum.
