A lot of time during travels, I noticed many combination of old and new, traditional and modern. I went to St. Mark's Square when one of the building is renovating, and was covered by advertisement. It's a strange combination yet very interesting.
I noticed this same phenomenon in Kassel, Germany. Much of the city was destroyed in WWII so there are much more modern buildings and things that popped up in all the empty spaces, right alongside some centuries-old structures. It's really cool!
Would you recommend touring the sights and locations of Rome, Florence, Venice and Paris on your own (say, with the many hop-on, hop-off bus tour circuits...though that won't likely be present in V...
