It's really a shame how backpackers have destroyed the local culture in Vang Vieng. The elderly are disillusioned and the the crime rate has gone up, as local kids see and imitate the bad behavior of rowdy travelers.

I agree with that.. It really is a sad development which can be noticed in many areas in SEA. But in contrast with the originally and religious life in rural Laos it is more clearly than elsewhere.
