The Apennine mountain range that extends throughout the length of Italy is often forgotten when ski season arrives. I spent a fun weekend in Campitello Matese in the southern region of Molise. Skiing conditions were great, black diamonds were challenging, and lines were short! If you're in Central Italy, want to experience European pistes, and don't have the time to go far up north to The Alps, I highly recommend skiing in Abruzzo (Roccaraso) or Molise as an alternative. Closest airport is Rome Ciampino or Fiumicino (about a 2.5 hour train ride south), or even Naples (about 2.5 hours north) - the stop is Boiano. Most hotels will then come pick you up from the train station if you are not renting a car.
