Selling tais at the Aileu market

Tais are traditional Timorese weavings, made using back-strap looms by village women. They are now typically made with commercial yarns, although traditional fibres can be found if you hunt hard. Each district has its own characteristic patterns, and you can easily accumulate 20kg-plus of weavings if you get carried away collecting one of each. Most Timorese women prefer the modern batik printed cottons that come from Indonesia, which he also had for sale, but all savvy market sellers know that foreigners like the traditional products. His hat is a product of the Portugese influence.
