While his girlfriend seems uncertain about her tasting, the young gentleman is ready to give it a try.
We've stayed three times at a charming chambre d'hote in Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy, a few kilometers from Beaune. Luckily, each visit has included a Saturday, when we've visited the wonderful morning market there. This cheese vendor is one of many, where we've picked up great local morbier, comte and other cheeses (our host loves cheese, too).
Markets also are great places to find local honeys and one vendor here has a wide selection of flavors.
The market sprawls through the streets and squares in this beautiful small city that is the capital of Burgundy wine country. There are caves and cafes all around, so you can take a break from shopping over a glass of wine or a snack. Or duck into the historic Hospices de Beaune, a hospital begun in the mid-1400s and now a historic site.
The market has a large number of outdoor food vendors and others selling clothing, crafts and other items. There's also an indoor area, where you can buy any cut of meat you've ever heard of, as well as more cheese vendors.
After leaving the market, we drive to the many nearby wine villages for tastings of some of the world's best wines.
