Remote Mayan Ruins in Mexico

Of the many Mayan Ruins I've visited in Mexico, the ruins of Calakmul have been by far the best. Why? Because this site is largely still covered in jungle. Not many tourists visit the ruins here either. Located only 22 miles from the Guatemalan border in the State of Campeche, Calakmul is off the beaten path a bit. This is why you'll often have the ruins to yourself as you explore for the day. Because it hasn't been overrun with visitors like Chichen Itza, you are still allowed to climb the pyramids (the largest is 165 feet tall!). Located within a protected biosphere reserve, it is many miles from Xpujil, the closest town with any accommodation. Calakmul is an absolute highlight on any trip to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
