I have been to MotoGP, World Superbike, and AMA races all around the United States. Races fans in the States are enthusiastic and take great joy in the victory of their favorite rider. But I dreamed of more, going to Europe to witness the fanfare, the passion, the enthusiasm I have seen on tv. I wanted to be in the grandstands, with the screaming fans, the air horns cheering on and feeling the defeat in a fall. One day in May I found myself in Portugal at the MotoGP event at Estoril Circuit. It was no Spain, it was no Italy, but I could feel the passion as I made my way through the grandstands. As each lap wound around different sections of the grandstand would erupt with cheers and air horns. Through 26 laps, the devotion never died down. In this way it was like no race I had ever attended before but in other ways, the community and shared loved of a sport, it was like every race I had ever attended in the States. Racing is an international language. Everyone can understand the elation and defeat over the course of a weekend.
