Queen City Underground Tour in Over-the-Rhine
Delve deep back into Cincinnati's German history, when the population of German immigrants was over 100,000 and lead to the name of this unique neighborhood. These underground gems were forgotten when the Germans slipped away to the countryside after a wave of Anti-German sentiment swept through after WWI. After decades of being forgotten and built over, they've only recently been rediscovered and now you can tour them during a fascinating walking tour.
Where there are Germans, there is beer, and the many bars and beer halls that once populated this neighborhood meant that breweries abounded. To keep their barrels of beer cool, storage vaults were built underground while tunnels were dug to transport them back and forth below street level. Stops along the tour also include an old German beer hall, and the basement of a local church. Must be able to negotiate very steep stairs, unsteady ground, and not be claustrophobic!http://www.americanlegacyto...
