There are those who dream about Paris and those who devote their lives to making it a part of their lives. Six years as a local and I can say that my identity is inextricably linked to this place, one of the world's most unequivocally beautiful cities and one of its most storied. It's a hub for hedonists, a wellspring of inspiration for creatives and a haven for history buffs. Get lost, go exploring, eat until your belly hurts and do it all over again.

Paris from the Pompidou

If you want an amazing view of the Paris skyline -- while also admiring incredible art in Europe’s largest modern art museum -- head to Centre Georges Pompidou, or ‘the Pompidou,’ an art museum, library, and research center located in the 4th arrondissement near Les Halles and the Marais.

This high-tech structure sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the quaint, traditionally architected Parisian neighborhood, and is either loved or hated for its unique character. Its peculiar skeletal design features industrial pipes and crisscrossed beams, with giant clear tube walkways that offer stunning wrap-around views of Paris.

Inside, you can browse an immense and diverse collection of modern and contemporary art. The Pompidou's past exhibition repertoire touts such famed icons as Andy Warhol, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and, more recently, Edvard Munch and Gerhard Richter.

On my visit, I was captivated by ‘Elles,’ an exhibit featuring hundreds of works by female artists that offered a fascinating and deeply moving perspective on history from a woman’s standpoint.

(If you want to skip the art but still enjoy views of the City of Love, another great spot for sweeping panoramas that few others know about is l’Arc de Triomphe – it’s cheaper and faster to climb to the top of this perfectly positioned pinnacle than the Eiffel Tower!)
