Minaret: Bab Zuweila, Islamic Cairo

Cairo is known as the “City of a Thousand Minarets” but there are indeed many more than that these days and they rise up out of the hazy, crowded streets like fingers on a giant hand pointing strait to heaven. “This way up”, they seem to say, as the muezzin calls “Allah huwa akbaru” five times a day. Don’t try to climb to the very, very tippy top of the narrow spiral staircase at Bab Zuweila, however, unless you just wrapped up a thirty day juice fast or are missing the limbs on one side of your body. I got stuck and had to be pried out with a broom handle by a nice man named Monsour.
