Maya Masks and Much More!

The Maya city of Chichicastenango is a great place to experience some living Maya culture as well as shop for some amazing Maya artwork to grace your home and remind you of your travels in the highlands. The most popular items are the brightly painted, carved wooden masks featuring animals and Maya deities and the equally vibrant textiles, such as the huipil, blankets, clothing and many other woven goods. The woven items, such as the huipil, come in several designs which are representative of a particular highland town. So Maya highlanders know where each other come from based on the patterns stitched onto their clothing. The masks range in price based upon quality. The most expensive examples are masks actually worn by performers in various festivals and the least expensive are obviously decorative and wouldn’t even fit someone's head comfortably. Chichicastenango is located in the mountains of southern Guatemala and is easily reached by "chicken bus" from colonial Antigua or the shores of Lago de Atitlan. The spectacle of brightly adorned Maya men and women crowding the lively market combined with the active rituals carried out on the stairs of the central cathedral make Chichicastenango a wothwhile day trip from either Antigua or Lago de Atilan.
