Key West is best known for its laid-back, beach mentality, but there is a rich historical and cultural component to this beautiful city. The food and nightlife are world renowned, and there is a diverse array of museums, historical sites, and educational opportunities.
Key West may be known best as a beach destination, but the island offers plenty of cultural and educational experiences as well. The Key West Museum of Art and History focuses on educating locals and visitors on the art, architecture, and history of the Florida Keys. There are actually three separate historic sites that each serve as a museum: the custom house, the lighthouse, and Fort East Martello. Plan to spend at least half a day touring the buildings and learning more about the rich history of the Florida Keys.
