fly into San Jose, costa rica and jump on a bus from main bus station to pacific coast town of jaco. only couple hours ride on scenic road, and you'll be getting surf in no time. jaco is a good starting point to get your bearings, before jumping down to pavones or Oso peninsula perhaps. ton of cheap hotels in town and amenities/rental cars/money change/food/bars. beach is right off road and Clarita beach hotel is clean place on beach with restaurant, swinging hammocks and waves. $40 rooms, simple, Safe. Even a pool/wifi ! Just over the hill is playa hermosa, which is smaller village feel, cabanas and cheap lodging as well and bigger waves if you're up to it. you can rent boards in jaco. rent a bike or car to venture to play hermosa just 5k away.
