Island of Dreams
Located just off the eastern shore of Bali, Indonesia is a small island called Nusa Lembongan. It is a great place for a day trip if you're vacation on Bali and is only a 30-40min boat ride from Sanur. There is a boat that will take you between the two islands a few times a day.
Once arriving on the shores of Lembongan it is best to rent a scooter for the day (~$6USD). There are only a few roads on the island so it is impossible to get lost and the beaches are well marked by signs. Unlike Bali there is no traffic on the island!
We set out around the island in a counterclockwise loop. We stopped and watched the villagers drying colorfull seaweed along the shore (this is used to make ice-cream). We stopped at the mangroves for a fresh seafood lunch, some beach time, and some snorkeling. And then explored the many picturesque beaches around the island. Our favorite was "Dream Beach" and it lived up to its name.
Be sure you don't lose track of time on this paradise of an island. It is easy to do and we almost missed our return boat back to Bali that afternoon!

We were in Indonesia the summer of 2011, spent three nights on the island of Bali, the rest on Nusa Lembongan, Lombok and the Gillis. Concerning NL, we loved the Dream Beach area: far away from the tourist area. We did not rent a scooter, but walked everywhere, as the area is very accessible by foot, and it is very difficult to interact with the residents while speeding by on a noisy scooter. NL was one of our favorite places we visited during a year of travel.
btw: it would be difficult to spend the day as the last boat leaves NL about 3PM, if I remember correctly.
One of my favorite travel memories of my life thus far was spending time on Lembongan. Soooo so beautiful - you've all said a lot of great things so I just wanted to add that there is also INCREDIBLE diving just off the island - we did a fantastic Drift Dive along a big Shelf of an abyss (Drift dives are where there is a current that pulls you along without any effort - example: to stay in one place on this dive I had to turn and "swim the other direction" in order to stay in one place.) It was so much fun and a different experience to be sure!
