UNLIKELY ART: Cocoa Beach, Florida

Competitive sand castle building was never something I would have considered as a professional hobby. But it certainly is so.

This was my first time visiting the competition, recently held in the sunny Cocoa Beach, FL. I was so impressed with the creativity and attention-to-detail that these artists incorporate into their sand creations.

Who would have thought that something so delicate and, well..odd?, could be used to illustrate scenes of the imaginative Jules Verne.

If you're a native Floridian, current resident, tourist or just passing through, these sand sculpting competitions are worth the visit! Find them online and mark your calendars - the sculptors are always traveling and the next display could be right in your town!
