Horses of Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

The Gili Islands lie off the coast of Lombok and are only accessible by boat. There are three laws on the islands: no dogs, no motorised vehicles of any kind, and no police. Because there are no motorised vehicles, horses and their carts (cidomos) can be hired for travelling longer distances on the islands. The bells attached to their harnesses can be heard all over the largest island, Gili Trawangan.
Circling Gili T (as it is affectionately known) is a wide path that takes about 2- 4 hours to complete on foot. As we walked down one particularly empty stretch, we rounded the corner to discover the sight of men bathing their horses in the surf. The closeness between the men and their horses was clearly evident. Sometimes on holiday it can seem like every path is trodden and there is nothing left to stumble across. But the Gilis reminded me that there is plenty more to see and discover. In these islands, you never know what might be around the corner.
