Despite the strong Catholic influence brought by Portugese colonists, those in remote parts of Timor-Leste continue to practice animistic religions. I found this spirit house (Uma lulik) near a highlands village. Uma lulik hold the spirits of ancestors, and are rebuilt every ten years to help renew the community's connection to its forebears and its land. They are beautiful traditional structures, built with love and care.
