I distinctly remember our guide Filipe singing to U2's Beautiful Day during the last 10 minutes of our drive to Piódão, all the while nervously pondering whether this journey was worth the destination. High in the Serra do Açor mountains, the narrow dirt road we traveled seemed to cling to the side of the mountain and every turn seemed more perilous than the last. Upon arrival, Piódão appeared to be something plucked out of a fairy tale -- a tiny village of schist cobbled homes, with its snowy white church taking center stage.
