Mixquic is a little town to the south-east of Mexico City. It is known for its traditional celebration of the Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which is a national holiday that takes place every year on November 2. The villagers open their homes for the public to view their own personal alters. The cemetery is decorated and lit by candlelight at night.

All over Mexico small towns and big cities celebrate Dia de los Muertos to varying degrees. But getting outside of the big cities and into the smaller places has a really authentic feel.

The drive to Mixquic is about and 1 1/2 south of Mexico City and is actually still considered part of the Federal District. We stayed at a hotel near Coyoacan (which also has a great celebration) and made that our "base camp".

It is a full on street party with beer and food galore. Just bring your pesos and your camera.
