My wife and I decided to volunteer on a working coffee farm in Costa Rica - "voluntourism" as it's called.
We worked from early morning to early afternoon, living in a rustic cabina. Showers were cold, bugs were aplenty, standard uniform was knee-high rubber boots and a machete, food was whole.
At first, it was a bit of a jolt to the lifestyle we're accustomed to but, now that it's all behind us, we both agree it was one of the best things we've done for ourselves.
