Imagine your favorite church. Now remove the furniture, and put in a carpet of fragrant soft pine needles. Then light it up with tens of thousands of candles and enormous bouquets of local flowers. Breathtaking.

In this indigenous village outside of San Cristobal de las Casas, an old Catholic Church has blended with Mayan traditions. Out of respect, I wasn't allowed to take photos inside.

Best to get there by local taxi from San Cristobal's centro. If you're able to find a local guide, they'll help translate from local dialects. Otherwise, stand back and quietly observe this incredible mashup of traditions.
