Choux Crème de la Crème
Choux à la crème. Profiteroles. Cream puffs. Shu cream. Whatever you want to call them, you cannot deny their deliciousness. Fluffy choux pastry filled with cream with just the right touch of sweetness.
Another thing you cannot deny: Gateaux de Voyage in Shibuya has the BEST choux crème in Tokyo. Hands down.
What makes the choux crème here the best of the best? The concept. Let's name some of our favorite sweets: cookies, pie, pastry, custard. Now let's put all of those into one wonderful, magical dessert.
Gateaux de Voyage does not make a simple, fluffy choux crème. Oh yes, the base is delightfully soft, delicious puff pastry, but to that, Gateaux has added a light, crisp layer of pie crust with a delicate snap. This is topped with another layer of choux pastry brushed with butter and sugar to create a delectable cookie-like crown that just begs to be eaten. Within all this is a generous heaping of rich, creamy, vanilla custard, flecked with bits of vanilla bean. This brilliant creation blends textures, flavors, and even temperatures, as the custard is quite chilled, to create the best choux crème I have ever had. Everyone I have brought here, including some Parisians with very discerning taste, agrees.
If you are in Tokyo, do yourself a favor and pick up a few of these delicious morsels of heaven. Gateaux de Voyage is located in the basement level of the Tokyu Building attached to Shibuya Station, right next to Andersen Bakery. I promise you will not be disappointed.
