Breathtaking Views

As a child, I watched a movie about Father Damien, a Belgian priest that dedicated his life to ministering to native Hawaiians exiled to this remote area of Molakai'i for having contracted Hanson's disease (leprosy). I finally made it to Hawaii and this was a bucket list item for me. Now there are two ways to get to this remote section. You can wimp out and fly into the small airport or do what I did. I chose to ride a mule down the Pali Trail. It has an elevation of 1664' with 26 switchbacks on the side of a cliff. Taking the mule ride down is absolutely a must do. Even if you have a fear of heights like me. You just have to get into your head the mule won't walk off the cliff. Although at times it looks like they are doing exactly that. I was torn between hanging on for dear life and taking photos all the way down. Once there, you are given a guided tour. Friendly guides are knowledgeable and welcome the questions. You are not allowed to wander off on your own, but they give you generous time for picture taking. This is a trip you won't forget.
