The drive from LA heading north to Carmel on the PCH through Big Sur is a journey in itself. It doesn't matter your destination, although the quaint town of art, shops and restaurants in Carmel won't disappoint. I've driven through the French Pyrenees and live in the Santa Monica Mountains in LA and this drive surpasses those. Don't forget to (safely) look backwards along the drive to see different breathtaking perspectives. Don't be tempted to take the 101 to shave off time, the drive on the 1 IS the trip! If you're not settled at a town/restaurant for sunset, just pull over and enjoy the view/take a few pics. Many hiking trails and national parks provide ideal leg stretching & picnicking opportunities. Please note the 17 Mile Drive through run down Pebble Beach after this drive IS disappointing and not worth the time or $10 per person. Skip it and you'll have time for the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas above Monterey! Enjoy :)
