Bowling Ball Beach

Odd-shaped geologic formations. These rocks are super round, a miracle of nature, the incessant pounding of the Pacific somehow shaping these formations into one of the weirdest and most unique looking formations I've seen on a beach.

Bowling Ball Beach is a seldom-visited beach south of the town of Point Arena in Mendocino. If you want to see the formations, you need to get there early in the morning (and for the best bet, check tide charts for Mendocino County beforehand).

This is a long exposure photo taken early in the morning in July. It's foggy around this time of year, so if you want truly good light, probably the best time to go is October, when it's clearer. Storms can sometimes come rolling in, but if you're a photographer, this is one of the most glorious displays of nature's art you'll ever see, a beautiful light show in the sky.

There's places to eat and stay in Point Arena and other places north and south of here.

The path leading down to the beach involves a little bit of climbing down a rope ladder.
