Beached Redwoods

If you've yet to experience the extreme pleasure of visiting the redwoods, you may be surprised to learn how close these dark, cavernous, other-worldly forests are to the bright sunny beach. Switch up your redwood camping itinerary by breaking camp for a beach camp site like Nickel Creek in Northern California. Head south out of Crescent City on Enderts Beach Road until you run out of road. Backpack a couple miles south along the great coastal expanse until you reach the camp site. Just beyond the site is a beach and the titular creek--where a massive redwood has washed up. When tide is low, you can actually climb out onto the sun-bleached tree. Who thought the best place to climb a redwood would be the beach? In the accompanying photo, try to find me. I'm the dot on the tree.
