Beach Warrior
It was one of those days where even sitting still caused a bead of sweat to form and roll down my back. The ice-cold fruit smoothie couldn’t cool me down fast enough during my pit-stop at Forty Thieves in Diani Beach on my drive from Mombasa to Shimoni. I saw a lone Maasai walking down the beach and his striking red Shúkà caught my eye. I ask my friend about him, because I thought Maasai traditionally lived further inland. She explained it is now common for Maasai to move down to Kenya’s South coast and take up jobs in security at local resorts and bars.
