As we pulled up to the gas pumps at the Stripes convenience store on Highway 90, my friend who was driving suddenly screamed.

“Oh my god, I am not getting out!”

We all looked up and saw a Texas-sized pick-up with a giant mound of animal bones and hides in the truck bed. A young man stood by it, seemingly staring into the dark at nothing.

I asked my friend to roll down her window, and reached for my camera to capture the unlikely scene. But just as I was trying to focus, the guy turned and stared directly at me. Caught off guard, and just 10 feet away, I had to say something.

“Uh, what’cha got there?”

The guy stared at me blankly for a few seconds as if I had just asked him what planet we were on.

“Bones.”

Right.

“Okay, ahem. What for?”

Again, the incredulous look.

“Sculpture.”

Right, of course. Makes perfect sense in Marfa.
