An extraordinary monument

Apologies for the quality of the photo – actually a still from video I shot in 1998. The extraordinary monument isn’t the Hungarian Parliament – though that is plenty extraordinary – but rather the statue in the foreground of a pensive man on a bridge looking toward the Parliament building. The man is Imre Nagy, prime minister of Hungary during the uprising in 1956. The statue of Nagy, halfway across the sculpted bridge, is said to symbolize his getting the nation halfway to freedom. One can argue that the politics are more complicated, but this easily- overlooked, life-size statue is among the most moving monuments I’ve seen anywhere in the world.
