A private hammam in Marrakech

I wasn't crazy about the thought of being scrubbed and washed in a room full of strangers, even if they were of the same sex. However, I did want to try a hammam. Les Bains de Marrakech turned out to be exactly what I wanted.

We were in Morocco for only six days. In the first four, we toured the tannery in Fes, visited the town of Ifrane and Azrou cedar forest, camped in the Sahara Desert, and arrived at Ouarzazarte. My friend called the experience "Morocco on steroids."

On day five, we headed for Marrakech. After a stop at Aït Benhaddou, we settled into our hotel near Jamaa el Fna Square. After exploring the square, we were ready to spend our last moments in Morocco at the spa.

The spa has private hammam rooms. I wasn't sure if they allowed mixed sexes so we agreed that my friend and I would go to one room, while our husbands another. To my relief, when we arrived, the receptionist asked if we would like to use the rooms by couple. Whew! Yes, please!

The spa was a palace. There were so many corridors that, if we had not been guided, I would have been lost. After my husband and I were done with our hammam treatment, we were directed to a relaxation room and given tea and cookies. Since we had also opted for a couple's massage, we were then taken to a two-person massage room for the relaxing experience.

I'm so glad we saved this treat for the end of our Moroccan adventure. A flight to Morocco just to spend the day at this hammam would be worth it.
